Resume Action Verbs List

March 1, 2025

Strong action verbs create impact. Replace weak phrases like "responsible for" with "led," "spearheaded," "implemented," "optimized," "delivered," "designed," "built," "launched," "reduced," "increased." Action verbs make your accomplishments feel active and concrete.

Build a personal list of go-to verbs for your industry. Keep it handy when updating your resume. Rotate through your list to avoid repetition. The right verb can transform a mundane bullet into a compelling one.

Vary your verbs—don't start every bullet with "managed." Match the verb to the actual work. Technical roles might use "developed," "debugged," "architected"; leadership roles might use "mentored," "directed," "coached." Sales roles might use "negotiated," "closed," "exceeded."

Avoid passive or weak verbs: "helped," "assisted," "participated in" can often be replaced with something stronger. "Helped implement" becomes "Collaborated on implementation of" or "Supported rollout of." Be honest—choose verbs that accurately describe your role.

Review your bullets for redundancy. If multiple bullets say similar things, consolidate or differentiate. Each bullet should add new information. Strong action verbs help you say more in fewer words.

Consider the order of bullets within each role. Lead with the most impressive or relevant outcome. Sometimes the chronological order of projects matters less than the impact order. Put your best foot forward first. Recruiters often read top to bottom, so prioritize accordingly. Lead with your strongest material.
