How to Write a Resume Summary

January 28, 2025

A resume summary sits at the top and condenses your experience, skills, and value in 3–5 lines. Start with your years of experience and role level, then add key skills and one standout achievement. It should answer: "Why should I hire this person?"

Summaries are optional for very experienced candidates with clear career paths—their experience speaks for itself. But for most people, a well-crafted summary improves scanability and helps ATS match your profile to the role.

Tailor it to each job. Use the job title and company in your summary when possible. Avoid clichés like "hard-working team player." Be specific. Instead of "experienced professional," say "Senior Software Engineer with 8 years building scalable web applications."

Include a mix of your strongest qualifications and relevant keywords from the job description. If you have certifications or industry-specific achievements, mention them. A good summary can persuade recruiters to read the rest of your resume.

Skip the summary if you're an entry-level candidate with limited experience—a strong objective may work better. For senior roles, the summary is often expected. It sets the tone for the entire document.

Your summary should feel confident but not arrogant. Avoid superlatives like "best" or "top performer" unless you have awards to back them up. Let your achievements speak for themselves. A well-written summary creates anticipation for the rest of your resume. It should make recruiters want to keep reading. First impressions matter in a competitive job market.

Use our Summary + Skills generator to create a draft, then refine it for each application. A tailored summary can significantly improve your chances of getting past ATS and into human hands.
